Not Enough Chairs for Thanksgiving? Extra Seating Ideas That Don’t Look Like an Afterthought

You said yes to hosting. Then your cousin asked if she could bring her new boyfriend, and your brother’s bringing his in-laws, and now you’re standing in your dining room counting chairs. Six. You need fourteen.
Don’t panic-buy a dining set. Most people only need extra seats a few times a year, so the goal is seating that’s comfortable enough for a two-hour meal and disappears into a closet on Friday morning.
Decide first: one table or two?
This changes everything. If you want everybody at one long table, you need a table extension plus chairs that match the height. If you’re okay with a main table and a second table nearby, you can get away with lower, cheaper seating at the overflow spot.
Honestly? One long table always feels more like a holiday. If you can make it fit, do it.
A folding table to extend the one you have
A 6-foot folding table butted up against your dining table adds six to eight seats instantly. Throw one long tablecloth or a runner over both and nobody can tell where one ends. Check that the heights match before you buy. Most standard folding tables sit at about 29 inches, which lines up with most dining tables.
The ones that fold in half like a briefcase are the move for apartments. They fit behind a door or under a bed.

Folding chairs that aren’t miserable
The old metal folding chair is cold and loud and your uncle will complain about it. Padded folding chairs fix most of that for not much more money. Look for a padded seat (and ideally a padded back), and buy them in a 4-pack, which almost always costs less per chair.
Cosco and Flash Furniture both make padded sets that show up in a lot of homes for exactly this reason.

If the plain look bugs you, slip-on chair covers make mismatched seating look intentional. Same color, same fabric, and suddenly your folding chairs and your dining chairs are a set.

Benches seat more people per foot
A bench on one side of the table squeezes in an extra person compared to chairs, because there’s no gap between seats. Kids love them. Folding benches exist and they store just as flat as a table.

The kids’ table (or the couch table)
If you’ve got little ones coming, a low kids’ table is a gift to everybody. They get their own space, you get fewer spilled cranberry sauce incidents at the main table. Floor cushions around a coffee table also work great for teens and the cousins in their twenties who’d rather sit together anyway.

Stealing seats from around the house
Before you buy anything, walk your place. Desk chairs, the bench at the foot of your bed, the stools at the kitchen counter, the ottoman. Counter stools are usually too tall for a dining table, but they’re perfect for a casual appetizer area so people aren’t all crowding the kitchen.
And ask guests. “Can you bring two folding chairs?” is a completely normal Thanksgiving request. Nobody’s offended.
Make it fit in a small space
If the long table won’t fit in your dining area, turn it. Run it diagonally across the living room and push the couch against the wall for the day. We covered more of this in our guide to small apartment party ideas that don’t feel crowded, and the same rules apply. Move furniture out before you move people in.
What I’d buy
One 6-foot fold-in-half table and one 4-pack of padded folding chairs. That gets you from six seats to about twelve, it all stores in a closet, and you’ll pull it out again for Christmas, birthdays, and game day. Add a bench if you still come up short. FAQ
How many people fit at a 6-foot folding table?
Six comfortably, eight if you put one person on each end and everybody’s friendly.
How do I make folding chairs look nicer for Thanksgiving?
Use matching stretch chair covers or tie a fabric sash around the back. A small cushion in your table colors helps too.
What can I use for extra seating if I don’t want to buy chairs?
Borrow from neighbors, ask guests to bring folding chairs, or use benches, ottomans, and floor cushions around a coffee table.
Will a folding table be the same height as my dining table?
Usually. Most folding tables are around 29 inches tall, which matches standard dining tables. Measure yours before you buy.
Is it rude to have a kids’ table at Thanksgiving?
Not at all. Most kids prefer it. Just keep it close enough to the main table that they still feel included.
